Inference-Friendly Translation of ResearchCyc to First Order Logic

چکیده

We are concerned with reasoning efficiently over large-scale commonsense knowledge bases (KBs). In this paper we report on a case study of reasoning with ResearchCyc, a large KB of everyday-world facts represented in a high-order logic. The contributions of this paper are two-fold. First, we present a translation of a large part (over 90%) of the ResearchCyc ontology into First-Order Logic (FOL). Our translation avoids translations that use axiomatic Set Theory as a basis since it is known to be difficult for theorem-proving. We also verify the correctness of the translation empirically. Second, we present an experimental comparison of current theorem provers on the original ResearchCyc KB and the resulting FOL KB. Our experiments show that the higher-order inference procedure of ResearchCyc consistently beats current FOL theorem provers in terms of speed. It is particularly telling that all FOL theorem provers have trouble proving a valid query even after 90% of the irrelevant clauses are removed. This shows that reasoning with high-order logics is a valid alternative to FOL reasoning in large-scale commonsense domains. On the other hand, our results suggest that an axiomatic set theory (inherently difficult for theorem provers) is not needed for most of the translation. Finally, the result of our translation offers a new challenge to the FOL theorem proving community.

First-Orderized ResearchCyc : Expressivity and Efficiency in a Common-Sense Ontology

Cyc is the largest existing common-sense knowledge base. Its ontology makes heavy use of higher-order logic constructs such as a context system, first class predicates, etc. Many of these higher-order constructs are believed to be key to Cyc’s ability to represent common-sense knowledge and reason with it efficiently. In this paper, we present a translation of a large part (around 90%) of the C...

ROBUSTNESS OF THE TRIPLE IMPLICATION INFERENCE METHOD BASED ON THE WEIGHTED LOGIC METRIC

This paper focuses on the robustness problem of full implication triple implication inference method for fuzzy reasoning. First of all, based on strong regular implication, the weighted logic metric for measuring distance between two fuzzy sets is proposed. Besides, under this metric, some robustness results of the triple implication method are obtained, which demonstrates that the triple impli...

ProbLog Technology for Inference in a Probabilistic First Order Logic

We introduce First Order ProbLog, an extension of first order logic with soft constraints where formulas are guarded by probabilistic facts. The paper defines a semantics for FOProbLog, develops a translation into ProbLog, a system that allows a user to compute the probability of a query in a similar setting restricted to Horn clauses, and reports on initial experience with inference.

Determining the extent of building destruction after an earthquake using satellite imagery and fuzzy logic (Case study of Sarpol-e-Zahab region)

Background and objective: Earthquake is one of the most destructive natural disasters. Earthquakes occur in urban areas, destroying buildings and injuring people living in them. Urban center buildings are among the features that are exposed to many hazards during an earthquake. One of the first measures taken after an earthquake is relief. Locating damaged buildings can speed up relief efforts....

Compact Propositional Encoding of First-Order Theories

In this paper we present polynomial-time algorithms that translate First-Order Logic (FOL) theories to smaller propositional encodings than achievable before in polynomial time. For example, we can sometimes reduce the number of propositions to O(|P | + |C|), or O(|P | · log |P |), for |P | predicates of arity k and |C| constant symbols. The guarantee depends on availability of some graphical s...
